Ross began his forestry career with the Nova Scotia Department of Lands & Forests in 1949. In 1954, he left the department and went to work for Hollingsworth & Whitney, later Scott Paper, where as purchase wood superintendent he was instrumental in promoting the harvesting of pulp wood from private land. He retired from Scott Paper in 1986. Since then, Ross has been an active volunteer in forestry and community organizations including Forest Products Association of Nova Scotia; Chairman of the Forest Products Roads Commission; Nova Scotia & Cobequid Christmas Tree Growers Association; Voluntary Planning Commission on private land usage; NS Forest Technicians Association & the first chief of the Salmon River Fire Brigade.
